Prevalence
It is estimated that 91% of women and girls in Egypt have been affected by female genital mutilation or female circumcision.
Type of FGM
Type 1 and type 2 FGM are prevalent. Type 3 is no longer practised in Egypt any more. This is sometimes referred to as ‘pharaonic circumcision’.
The law
FGM has been against the law since 2008. The penalty is a fine and imprisonment.
Medicalisation
It is estimated that 72% of FGM in Egypt is performed by a doctor. This is what is called medicalisation of FGM. In Sudan it is 1%, Kenya it is 4%, and Nigeria it is 3%.
